The 10 Commandments of Business Networking

So you know networking is important for your small-medium sized business; but do you know how to network effectively?

Networking is key to promoting your business, finding leads, marketing yourself, and drawing referrals… yet most of the time it isn’t done correctly. I often hear people tell me “Nobody I met can use my services!” or “None of these people can help me” … what they fail to forget is NETWORKING IS NOT ONLY ABOUT YOU! It’s about each other, and developing a relationship that provides mutual benefits. The person you meet may not be able to help you right off the bat, but who knows when they’ll know someone that can help you.

Networking is like a marriage to some extent. You get to know each other, develop trust, gain credibility, and then support each other through thick and thin. When was the last time you met someone at one event and decided it was time to tie the knot? It’s a process!

So to help you in your journey in business networking & relationship marketing here are 10 Commandments I came across that can make you a better networker:

  1. Thou shalt drop the “what is in it for me?” attitude.
  2. Thou shalt listen.
  3. Thou shalt build a relationship.
  4. Thou shalt give the first referral.
  5. Thou shalt not tell others of the referral you require; thou shalt “show them” with a story.
  6. Thou shalt be specific of the type of referral.
  7. Thou shalt reciprocate when appropriate.
  8. Thou shalt participate in the network executive, functions, and network time.
  9. Thou shalt thank the person who gave a referral.
  10. Thou shalt follow up on the referral within 24 hours.

Class of September 2010

Earlier today 14 of our BOSS Members successfully completed the BOSSystem Orientation!

A group of our driven BOSS Members gathered at the Old Mill this morning to learn more about the online component of the BOSSystem. They learned how to navigate their member account, post announcements for other members to see, utilize the BOSS Directory, and most importantly how to send and receive referrals using the very unique BOSS Referral System.

What once were strangers from different areas of the city, became familiar faces over the course of the morning. Not only were they now part of an innovative business community and support network, but they were armed with a tool that can really take their business to the next level.

As always the power of BOSS shon through as members began to give each other leads and referrals that could potentially lead to business. Best of all, everyone was more than happy to pass on these leads since they know what goes around, comes around … Seven-fold!

Congratulations to Francisco, Laura, Roman, Robert, Anne, Mark, Jared, Ryan, Khusheu, Steve, Kyle, Don, David and Carolyn who are all officially BOSS Certified Members!

    "I love BOSS events…"

    “…because over the past 4 meetings I’ve began to figure out what works and what doesn’t in the way I market my business. BOSS helped me realize that it’s about expressing to others what it is I enjoy about what I do!”

    These are the words of Jared, one of our BOSS Members, this morning as he reflected back on our event last night.

    It still gives me quivers to hear these stories and many others which prove the incredible impact we are having on each and every business owner we work with. I am constantly motivated by the quality of the community of businesses we are bringing together to really leverage off each other in some of the most creative ways possible. After asking BOSS Members to share their BOSS Success Stories at the beginning of last night, we learnt about various new partnerships, friendships, and referrals all starting to form within BOSS.     Stand Out From the Crowd… Be of Service!

    Business owners love networking!

    For many businesses networking is the lifeblood of new opportunities – especially smaller businesses and entrepreneurs.

    From my experience running the last BOSS meeting, I have a much better understanding for what causes success at networking meetings, and what doesn’t. I learned some of the habits many business owners develop during meetings – not all business owners, but many:

    —————————–

    (1) love talking about their business (as they should…)

    (2) are primarily looking for quick sales as opposed to long term relationships (understandable in today’s economy I guess…)

    (3) When not speaking about their business, can be distracted very easily

    Pretty simple right? And yet everyone falls victim to operating this way at some time or another – myself included. It’s human nature. But focusing on talking, quick sales, and your own business, is a recipe to be forgotten! You may generate some immediate sales, but you wont be remembered as easily, or be kept top of mind as someone to follow up with. In other words, you wont STANDOUT!

    Feedback is Your Friend!

    Excitement mounted as BOSS Members and guests arrived at the Old Mill Inn.

    This wasn’t going to be just another BOSS event. After receiving extensive feedback from our last event, the BOSS Team realized that changes were necessary to create even more value for the 75 business owners that were set to attend. We wanted to take action on what our BOSS Members and guests wanted to experience; since after all, this is their business community. So we, as a team, spent countless hours brainstorming, planning and preparing for an event that would create meaningful connections, solutions, and opportunities like never before.     BOSS Business Tip #5: Be on Time!

    We all know life happens. There are certain occasions where being on-time just isn’t going happen; whether it’s work, family, car troubles, whatever the issue may be. In these situations, you are given a free pass, however, don’t take advantage! Make sure you plan ahead, give yourself plenty of time. Some useful tips include; waking up on time (don’t hit “snooze”), be aware of what time it is, and in my opinion, most helpful, plan to be 15 minutes early. Remember when you schedule a meeting or appointment, you are not only using your own time, yet the other party’s as well. Be considerate when making plans. In order to the get the most out of a meeting, or appointment, ensure you always arrive in a timely fashion, allowing yourself to relax, take a deep breath, and absorb the information discussed.

    The more you give the more you receive…

    Do you believe in concepts like karma, the law of cause and effect, or the more you give the more you receive? At BOSS we absolutely do and we believe that these laws, if adopted, can create significant opportunities for greater results and growth for any business.

    To demonstrate this most effectively lets look at the power of sending another business a referral and what this can do for your own business. We all know the benefits of receiving a referral, but what are the benefits to the person sending a referral?

    If I am a smart business owner, when I receive a referral from somebody I immediately feel two things: (1) I am excited at the prospect of new business and (2) I am thankful to whoever has just referred the potential client to me. I am also immediately thinking about the person who has sent the referral to me, about their business, and how I can repay them for the effort they made on my behalf. That person’s company is now top of mind for me and, if I am smart, I will be making every effort to repay them. (more…)
